What is an author to do when he can’t decide what genre category his book should be listed under? I had this problem with my supposedly sci-fi story. Some readers say that although it is written like a memoir, it has to be fiction. Now how can a memoir be fiction? The story does contain many true events that are blended with my vivid imagination. Or so I thought it to be my imagination. But can my imagination actually be my reality? Can a human subconscious contain memories that are fabricated and implanted by another being?
Do I list my book under fiction or non-fiction? As for a sub-genre the story is certainly a mystery, a thriller for sure, maybe science fiction, has a dash of romance, is full of suspense, and packed with action/adventure.
The only solution I can see is to create a new genre category. I thought about calling it a sci-fi memoir, but that defies logic. I can’t call
it one or the other, that would probably confuse and eliminate potential readers. I have to come up with a new genre.
Any suggestions?
